University of Aveiro at EQUIFASE 2024

On 9-12 September 2024, the 13th Iberoamerican Conference on Phase Equilibria and Fluid Properties for Process Design (EQUIFASE 2024) took place in Évora, Portugal. The conference format was established in 1987 strengthening the American-European relationship between researchers from across both continents. The main topics of this conference are related to measurement, modelling, prediction, and simulation of physical-chemical properties concerning product and process design.

The University of Aveiro (CICECO) team presented four studies, in collaboration with IMDEA Energy, on the thermodynamic advances of the development of membrane-free batteries:

  • Phase Equilibrium in Biphasic Systems: Developing COSMO-base predictive models for efficient separation processes.
  • Thiocyanate's Effect on Cross-Contamination in ABS: Investigating Thiocyanate behavior in ABS of redox flow batteries.
  • Strategies to increase solubility of ROMs: Exploring 6 strategies to be explored on the development of higher energy density batteries.
  • Increasing Solubility of Redox-Active Species: Exploring experimental methods to quantify and evaluate the improvement of solubility in energy storage applications.

João Coutinho, leading the MeBattery team at the Aveiro Institute of Materials (CICECO), was one of the chairmen of the conference. Murilo Alcantara gave a presentation on “Thermodynamic Insights into Thiocyanate-Enhanced ATPs for Redox Flow Batteries” while the rest of the studies was presented in three posters two of which were directly related to MeBattery.
